Uniform Care

Coordinator: Miriam Culley

All band students are responsible for taking good care of their band uniforms. The uniforms will be worn at most football games and ALL competitions.

  • Do not place in the washing machine or dryer.
  • If they need to be ironed, use a pressing cloth or brown paper bag to protect the fabric. Use the wool setting on the iron.
  • If mud gets on the pants, let them dry and then brush the mud off with a stiff brush.
  • Spills should be blotted immediately. If there is still a stain, take the garment to “Neighborhood Drycleaners” on Montgomery Rd. (by La Rosa’s), A.S.A.P.
  • A garment bag is provided to protect the uniform on the way to and from competitions. ONLY the jacket and pants should be in the bag. (No shoes, smelly socks or change of clothes)
  • Do not store the uniform in the bag. Air the garments after each use and spritz with Febreeze as needed.
  • Fold the pants neatly on the hanger - button and zip up the jacket to help keep its shape. Always shut the Velcro cummerbund so that the braiding on the uniform isn’t ruined.

The band shoes (Dinkles) should be cleaned before each competition before coming to the high school. They can be cleaned with Soft Scrub. If they get wet at a football game, place them in front of the refrigerator vent over night. They will be dry in time for the competition. Do not use white shoe polish since it could rub off on the blue pants.

All students need to purchase white, knee length tube socks to wear under their uniform.

Hats, plumes, gloves, cords and drops are handed out for competitions only. They should remain at the high school.

The judges at competitions are looking for a “uniform look.” Students should not wear jewelry or nail polish. Hair needs to be tucked up in the hat. Undergarments should not stick out or show through the uniform.

If your student is in a fall sport, academic club or taking ACT/SATs--causing a scheduling conflict with a competition--Mr. Engel and the section leader MUST be notified in advance. It is your student’s responsibility to make arrangements to get the uniform and instrument to the competition, if he or she is not riding on the bus with the band.
